Samoa Cycling Tours Information
How long is the tour?
The cycling tour is on Savai’i only for 9 nights/10 days. Depending on your flights and other plans we can meet you at any of these points on the main island of Upolu (where the international airport and capital are located):
- Apia (the capital on Upolu)
- Mulifanua Wharf (where the ferry travels from Upolu to Savai’i)
- Faleolo International Airport (on Upolu and near the wharf)
The pickup location and time is flexible and depends if you are coming directly from the airport, what flight you are on or have spent a few days on the main island first. Let us know what your flights are and we will make sure we find a suitable solution for transfers.
What about my flights?
You book and pay for your flights separately from the cycle tour. This gives you the flexibility of purchasing tickets and making arrangements to suit if you are spending more time in Samoa.
It’s worth noting that there are some great deals offered throughout the year that give you fares and accommodation at very reasonable prices (for example, flights and 5 nights for $NZ699). Your flights with these deals are always able to be scheduled for longer than the 5 night stay, and here you can incorporate the cycle tour.
There are direct flights to Samoa from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Hawaii and Los Angeles, and connecting flights from most countries. Throughout the year you will find the direct airlines such as Air New Zealand, Polynesian Blue and Air Pacific have specials which are either flights and hotel packages or flights only. Check with your travel agent or online travel service for the best deals.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
We have planned stops at various places to take in the sights, provide local experiences and let you relax in the tropical surroundings. Our first day and night will be an introduction to Samoa in the main town of Salelologa, Savai’i so you get the best experience possible. Our tour then takes us through the villages of Sale’aula, Asau, Falealupo, Satuiatua,, Aganoa and back to Salelologa.
Accommodation during the tour will be fales/cabins on the beach at various and reputable accommodation sites. Some are more luxurious than others, but essentially you will have the rare opportunity of sleeping in a fale on a white sandy beach, with the water at your feet.
Who can come on tour?
Any adult who enjoys cycling and looking for adventure can participate. The minimum number for a tour is 6, to a maximum of 12. Of course we may have several smaller groups that make up the numbers so don’t hesitate about contacting us to register if you are an individual, couple or less than 5 people. Please note however that we cannot guarantee placement until these numbers have been realised but we are happy to discuss your needs.
How fit do I need to be?
Any adult who is moderately fit will be able to complete the tour. Don’t forget it’s not a race. The roads on Savai’i are sealed and excellent for riding on – and there is not a huge amount of vehicle traffic. The roads are generally flat and sea-side, but there are parts of the island when we travel inland that are lush and hilly. The average riding distance at any day is about 38 kms. The total loop is 180kms.
Do I need to bring my bike?
No. Having been on cycle tours in Samoa and internationally, we understand the beauty of convenience. We provide you with top quality Avanti bikes (24 gears) and helmets purchased in New Zealand.
Most of our bikes have water bottle cages and there is an option for a front- handle bag for your camera, wallet, water bottle, sunscreen and other small personal items you’ll need. Our support vehicle will transport your luggage to the various overnight destinations.
What kinds of activities are planned?
As mentioned we have done this tour by bike and also via car several times in planning your itinerary to be recreational, relaxing AND realistic. You will get to enjoy natural attractions and activities such as:
- Swimming with the turtles
- Visiting Samoa’s lava fields
- Swimming, snorkelling and surfing
- Experiencing the last sunset on earth
- Village visits and local experiences
- Enjoying the local food!
